59-year old Tom Watson is leading the British Open after 54 holes. When Tiger missed the cut my hopes for an engrossing must-see-TV tournament went to just about zero. Nobody believed his 18 hole would hold up. Or his 36 hole lead. What about his 54 hole lead? He can't, can he? He is 13 years older than Jack Nicklaus was when he won the Masters in '86, which was 13 years ago. Watson won the British at this very course in 1977, the year I was born. When I was about 7 years old, I would take my plastic golf club in my parents' TV room and play Tom Watson v. Jack Nicklaus v. Seve Ballesteros (Jack was the good guy).
Then Tiger came along and I forgot how to like golf when he isn't around. Tomorrow has the potential to be one of those moments in sports that, if you wrote it in a screenplay, nobody would believe it. Here's to hoping it's memorable...and the weather kicks up.
