So what did I watch last night to unwind after a hard day of work and chores? That's right, the 1984 mini-series GI Joe - The Revenge of COBRA. I will tell you what, it wasn't bad. Compared to the dialogue in some movies today, it was actually good.
This was the one that featured Destro's Weather Dominator, which as the name implies, dominates the weather. The Joes counter and the device breaks into 3 pieces - one piece lands on a tropical island, one lands in a pyramid (what are the odds of that?), and one lands on the "roof of the planet". The Joes and Cobra split up into teams to battle for the pieces while Zartan has his own plans...
The laser bullets fired in battle can destroy a building, shoot down a plane or helicopter, or merely shoot the gun out of an enemies hand. There is 100% survival in all situations, no matter what. Jet crash...not even a broken ankle. Ah, all the fun of violence without any of the actual reprecussions...what more could you ask for from a toy/cartoon.
Anyway, this was the introduction of Zartan and the Dreadnaughts (Glam Rock band?) and of Shipwreck, an alcoholic sailor who is a cross between Jack Nicholson and Han Solo. Only in the 80s.

I remember when Zartan was introduced. The action figure changed color - green, I think. Also, Shipwreck was much cooler than Cutter.
ReplyDeleteHe did turn green in the sun. It was his one weakness.
